COSSBA Conference Recap
The Consortium of State School Boards Associations (COSSBA) Annual Conference was held in February in Dallas. From Illinois, 138 people attended, including school board members, administrators, and IASB board members and staff. Presenters included Anisha Jogee, Board President of Arlington Heights SD 25, and Nick Polyak, Superintendent of Leyden CHSD 212, as well as IASB Assistant Director for Board Development Katie Bulava.

“It was wonderful to see such a great contingency from Illinois while also connecting and learning from board members and educational leaders from across the country,” said IASB Associate Executive Director Lori Grant. Illinois was also proudly represented, and it was inspirational to see student musicians, dancers, and performers from across the country infused into the event. They brought so much joy and energy to the room and were a great reminder of why we do this work. This conference was impressive! Well-organized and packed full of valuable content.”

COSSBA Advocacy
COSSBA has added an additional priority, Mental Health Supports For K-12 Public Education, to its advocacy efforts. According to COSSBA, “As our nation’s schools navigate the post-pandemic landscape and focus on improving student outcomes it is imperative to recognize the profound impact and challenge posed by mental health issues on the well-being of students and staff. The current mental health challenges within the public school system demand urgent attention, adequate funding, and comprehensive action. Addressing these challenges is crucial to creating a supportive environment that is conducive to learning.”

The position paper for Mental Health Supports For K-12 Public Education and details on each of COSSBA’s Advocacy Priorities are available on the COSSBA website.

The 2024 COSSBA Federal Advocacy Conference will take place September 8-10, 2024, in Washington D.C.
