The Illinois Association of School Boards welcomes Sarah Miller, J.D., as Associate Executive Director for Governmental Relations. Miller brings 17 years of service to public schools, most recently in her role as an education policy consultant for ED-RED, as well as other regional and statewide school advocacy organizations, for the past 10 years. In her role as education policy consultant, she assisted in the drafting, negotiating, and lobbying of hundreds of bills and legislative initiatives that impact public education, including student discipline, early literacy, college and career readiness, school finance, pensions, and property taxes.

Prior to her policy work, Miller practiced education law for seven years, advising and counseling school districts across the state on numerous aspects of public education, including FOIA/OMA, collective bargaining matters, and bond and debt issuances. Miller also served as an adjunct professor for education law at the UIC Law School in Chicago. She has also applied her passion for public education to her volunteer work through her local high school district’s Scholarship Foundation Board and Facilities Planning Committee.

Miller has a juris doctor degree from the UIC Law School and an undergraduate degree from Lawrence University.

In her role at IASB, Miller will lead the Governmental Relations team in developing and advancing the Association’s legislative priorities. This includes legislative advocacy, facilitating member engagement in the legislative process, developing key relationships with members of Congress, the Illinois General Assembly, and state agencies, leading the IASB Resolutions Process, and ensuring IASB’s members stay informed of all these efforts.
