The 2023 Joint Annual Conference, taking place in November in Chicago, will feature an abundance of learning and engagement opportunities in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

In its second year, the Equity Immersion will take place on a new day in 2023. On Thursday, November 16, join education leaders to discover how “Equity is your SUPERPOWER.” Equity is a conduit for diversity and inclusion and how school leaders are empowered to ensure a successful learning environment. This event will offer expanded table talks, dynamic speakers, vendor partners, hot topics, and more. Featured speakers at the Equity Immersion will include Carmen I. Ayala, Ph.D. and Nakia Hall, Ed.D.

Ayala recently completed four years as the State Superintendent with ISBE. Before that, she was superintendent of Berwyn North SD 98, where she steadily turned around lower-performing schools. Her distinguished career in education includes time at Plainfield CCSD 202, Community Unit School District 300 (Algonquin), East Aurora USD 131, and Chicago Public Schools. At the Equity Immersion, Ayala will engage participants in discussion about how to start or enhance their equity conversations. Three major questions will be discussed: What equity data is available? What questions can a Board Member ask to have deep conversations about equity? Where can you go for support?

As IASB’s Associate Executive Director of Equity Services, Hall is a champion for equity and believes all education leaders have what it takes to impact schools and communities through equitable policies, practices, and procedures. As the conduit between diversity and inclusion, equity is the driving force to accessibility, opportunities, and support for all students. Join Hall for the Equity Immersion closing session as she shares Make Equity Your Superpower: 10 Ways to Be an Unapologetic Equity Champion for Your District.

Registrants for the Equity Immersion must first be registered for the Joint Annual Conference. The Equity Immersion Follow-Up: The Extended Cut will offer an extended conversation with featured presenters and equity hot topics on Saturday, November 18, at 10:30 a.m. For additional information on the Equity Immersion, contact Yolanda Chavez.

The 2023 Joint Annual Conference will offer additional learning opportunities in Panel Sessions centering on equity, diversity, and inclusion in public education.
