Homeroom's new crowd wall draws a crowd

IASB’s Homeroom at the 2017 Joint Annual Conference featured a new twist for visitors, by asking them to fill out a sticky note and posting it to a “crowd wall.”

BoardBy late Saturday, the large white board was filled with dozens of messages, which answered the question: “What did you learn today that you will take back to your district?”

Comments ranged from “Plan for continuity best practices with board agreements,” to “IASB rocks!” Also “I found the school mobile app we were looking for,” “Information about ESSA and how it will affect my district,” and, a favorite post, “Being nice.”

Those who posted the messages were also invited to enter a drawing for one of two “conference survival kits.” This year’s giveaway included stainless steel tumblers, shoe inserts, umbrella, notepads, pens, sticky tabs, highlighters, reading glasses, auto-scan radio, USB light, energy drink, gum, candy and snacks. The winners of the survival kits were Jennifer Smith, Joliet PSD 86, and Janet Kaczkowski, East Maine SD 63.

IASB Homeroom also featured information and demonstrations about IASB member services, which were hosted or demonstrated by IASB staff. Visitors also met with IASB Board of Directors and were able to follow conference social media and photos in live-streaming displays. Members of the Illinois chapter of the National School Public Relations Association were also on hand to meet with guests and offer advice on local community relations issues.

“This was the second year for IASB Homeroom,” said James Russell, associate executive director for communications. “We hope this event and location becomes a must-see and do stop for our guests. We will continue to refine it and make next year’s Homeroom even better.”
