Ask the Staff: IASB creates webinar series
by Sandra Kwasa

The question for this issue is answered by Sandra Kwasa, IASB director of board development and the moderator of IASB's new Lunch and Learn webinars.

Question: Why webinars?

Answer: The Illinois Association of School Boards is offering a series of webinars to bring current, topical information to the membership in order to fulfill the Association’s mission point of providing premier training opportunities. The webinar format allows IASB to share current information on a variety of topics and allows interactive presenter and participant engagement, such as polling and asking and answering questions.

For IASB, it’s a new, different, and exciting method of sharing information, and thus far there has been phenomenal response. We hope this will help us reach districts we might not otherwise reach. Webinars offer flexibility for the presenter and user, including the ability to participate from almost any location and participate during the live presentation or view a recorded webinar.

The “Lunch and Learn” series of hour-long webinars opened in November. IASB’s Policy Department has taken the lead with webinars that include topics such as

“PRESS Issue 96 – Ten Bundles of Legislative Joy,” which highlighted the “trend of an uptick in legislation pertaining to school boards and their policy requirements,” including student records, mandate relief, anti-discrimination laws, student health, and licensure qualifications.

“Where in the World are Your Social Media Use Policies?” which looked at the legal issues surrounding school districts’ adoption of social media policies and used scenarios for school boards to “quiz” participants in the areas of transparency, privacy, governance, and best practices.

“Press Issue 97 and PRESS Plus Goes Digital – Big Things Come in Small Packages,” which heralded both the latest policy updates and the move to digital delivery for PRESS Plus subscribers.

Another “Lunch and Learn” included an informative presentation entitled “5Essentials Survey: It REALLY Matters to School Boards,” which discussed the climate and culture survey and the uses of the valuable data for school leaders that can be gained through it.

Future webinars include “Democracy IS Conflict: Is Yours Productive or Unproductive Conflict?” and “How to Write an Effective IASB Resolution – Take Action to Make Change!” Other webinar topics include community engagement, school finance basics, and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

IASB webinars are offered at no cost. For more information about upcoming webinars, or to listen to a previously recorded one, log in to My Account at iasb.com, and click the Online Learning Center tab.

We would love people to join our live webinars for the interactive learning experience, and to listen to previous webinars that they may have missed. Also, we are very interested to hear ideas people have for future topics for these webinars.
