GOVERNOR DELIVERS EDUCATION FOCUSED BUDGET ADDRESS, HOUSE PASSES BILL DEADLINE

On February 15 Illinois Governor JB Pritzker delivered a combined Budget and State of the State address to a joint session of the Illinois House and Illinois Senate. In the speech, Pritzker outlined plans to invest in early childhood education, continue to fund the Evidence-Based Funding formula and invest in Monetary Assistance Program grants for higher education. An in-depth analysis of the spending plan was covered in IASB Report 103-05. You can read the governor’s budget proposal for a deeper look at the numbers.

In typical fashion, committees of the House and Senate met all three days the General Assembly was in session. Most of the focus is still on organizing committees, with little movement on legislation. The Illinois House has a deadline of February 17 to introduce bills. While the number of bills introduced is expected to grow, there have been over 5,800 pieces of legislation filed so far in just over a month since the 103rd General Assembly was sworn in.
