November 15 of each year is a chance to recognize local school board members across Illinois. School Board Members Day is more than just an opportunity to thank the individuals who volunteer their time to serve on boards of education, it is also an occasion to build community awareness about the important position school board members play in the governance structure. Boards of education serve an essential role in representative democracy, providing a local voice for community education decisions.
The 2025 School Board Members Day theme is “The Heart of Local Education.” IASB has a number of resources available to recognize the service of Illinois school board members. Key messages, images, activity suggestions, and sample social media content that can be used to thank members of your board are posted on the IASB website. An honorary certificate that can be personalized and given to board members is available, along with a sample resolution that can be used by counties, townships, or other elected bodies to recognize school board service.
Customizable images for use on social media platforms can also be downloaded. The images can be personalized with a photo of the full board or individual board member images, and the district name and logo. Districts honoring local school board members on social media are encouraged to use #ThankABoardMember.
School districts and other groups are welcome to use any of the School Board Members Day resources without additional permission. For more information about School Board Members Day, contact Heath Hendren at ext. 1109.
