School design projects recognized

EEEThree school projects were honored with the 2018 Award of Distinction in the annual Invitational Exhibition of Educational Environments, sponsored by IASB Service Associates. Wight & Company received two of the top honors for designs of New Trier High School and Sunset Ridge School. ARCON Associates, Inc. was honored for their design of Stratford Middle School.

This is the 30th year for the design competition.

The awards were presented on Friday, November 16, during the First General Session of the 2018 IASB/IASA/IASBO Joint Annual Conference. Winning projects were selected by a jury comprised of three architects and three school administrators – none of whom had projects entered. Judging took place in September by a blind pool, meaning that the identity of those submitting materials is concealed from the jury members. Three projects also received Awards of Merit and five projects earned Honorable Mentions.

All 27 entries in this year’s exhibit were on display for Conference attendees in the Columbus Ballroom Foyer at the Hyatt Regency East Tower. This year’s winning entries are listed by firm, school, and district:

Criteria considered include program/challenge met; how the facility meets 21st-century education environmental needs; design; unique energy efficiency or “green” features; and safety, including passive security design and traffic patterns.

All of this year’s entries will be added to IASB’s School Design Database. The searchable online database is available for use by IASB member districts and their architectural firms. The file is updated each year after the competition and contains more than 500 Illinois public school design projects.
