With the 2025 consolidated election firmly in the rearview mirror, many first-time school board members are becoming accustomed to their new positions. But with every new chapter, there is always more to learn and insights to be gained. Through IASB, new school board members have access to many resources to help navigate their board responsibilities.
To date, more than 1,100 new school board members have been seated among IASB member districts since April. Each of these members should have received a mailed packet of information to help them transition into their new role. The New Board Member Welcome Packet includes information on IASB programs and resources and a New Board Member Roadmap to Success – a recommended learning path to guide new members through the first year of service.
The New Board Member webpage also includes a collection of valuable information, pointing new members to required training courses, recorded webinars, and additional materials useful for both new and veteran school board members.
Until the end of September, the IASB Bookstore is offering a special deal on a package of books for new board members. The package includes three top selling books: Coming to Order, Essentials of Illinois School Finance, and the Illinois School Law Survey. This book package is available to IASB members at a discounted price of $90, plus shipping.
New board members should mark their calendars for Super Saturday on September 13. Super Saturday will include a full day of in-person learning at three locations throughout the state. The events in Collinsville, Naperville, and Peoria will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include a networking breakfast and lunch. School leaders will hear from a panel of legal experts, veteran school board members, and IASB staff on a variety of governance and leadership topics.
