Day 3: Rejuvenate, Refocus, and Respond
As the Joint Annual Conference drew to a close on Sunday morning, attendees had one final chance to view artwork from Illinois public elementary and high school students, presented in collaboration with the Illinois Art Education Association.
The morning session brought participants together for Coffee and Conversation, one last chance to exchange ideas and encouragement in sessions designed for board presidents, new board members, large districts, rural districts, advocacy, and more. School board members exchanged experiences and spoke about how the support they receive at the Conference leaves them inspired and rejuvenated, as well as about the many ways the Conference’s knowledge exchange, opportunities for connections, and professional development all help them in their work on behalf of Illinois' public school students.
Not a motivational speaker, Engagement Specialist Clint Swindall was the final speaker at the Third General Session presented by IASA and led by its president, Scott Doerr, Ed.D.
Swindall opened by posing the question, “What does it mean to be a hero?” and then presented commentary on people who are engaged, disengaged, or actively disengaged (and recruiting new members). He noted that most of us “bounce” between these levels, but posited that consistency is essential. Swindall offers practical steps to overcoming negativity, including elevating the conversation with his tagline, “Tell me something good!” Parting words from the Joint Annual Conference included a challenge to refocus on our leadership skills and respond to today’s challenges with a positive outlook.
