In 2007, the Illinois House of Representatives declared November 15 as School Board Members Day. The resolution states the annual recognition is “a way to honor those citizens who devote so much of their time and energy for the education of our children.”
The day of recognition is an opportunity for communities to honor their local leaders and thank them for their commitment to providing quality education opportunities for all students. It is also an occasion to build community awareness about the significant role school board members play in the community governance structure. Boards of education serve an essential role in representative democracy, providing a local voice for community education decisions.
IASB has a number of resources to recognize the service and leadership of Illinois school board members. Key messages, graphics, activity suggestions, and sample social media content that can be used to recognize your board are posted on the IASB website. An honorary certificate that can be personalized and given to board members is available, along with a sample resolution that can be adopted by counties, townships, and other elected bodies.
A customizable image for use on social platforms can be personalized with a photo of the full board and the district name and logo. Districts are encouraged to use #ThankABoardMember when recognizing school board members on social media.
