The Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) announces the release of a new edition of Essentials of Illinois School Finance: A Guide to Techniques, Issues, and Resources. The substantially updated reference helps Illinois education leaders understand and manage the increasingly complex financial realities facing public schools.

Authored by Ann Williams, Ed.D., SFO, CSBO, a recognized leader in Illinois school finance, the new edition builds upon the foundation established by original author James B. Fritts, Ph.D., while incorporating the current issues, policies, and governance considerations that shape school district financial decisions across the state.

"A balanced budget is important, but it doesn't tell the whole story," said Williams. "Board members need to understand how financial decisions affect students and the long-term health of their districts. I wanted this edition to help them ask better questions and make more informed decisions."

For more than two decades, Essentials has served as a practical guide for current and aspiring school leaders, budget makers, and others seeking a clear understanding of school finance principles and practices. The Eleventh Edition continues that legacy while addressing the evolving fiscal landscape.

Organized into three parts, the 177-page book examines securing and managing revenue, expenditure management, and governance responsibilities that support district financial health and long-term success. A preview of the book’s contents is available from IASB.

Retail price for the Eleventh Edition is $49. IASB members can purchase at a discounted rate of $39 from the IASB Bookstore. Non-members, including students, may order by phone (217) 528-9688, ext. 1145 or email [email protected].
