Stand Up 4 Public Schools
Launched in early 2014 by the National Association of School Boards, "Stand Up 4 Public Schools" became a sounding board for individuals and organizations that want to see their support of public education grow.
The purpose of IASB's own "Stand Up 4 Public Schools" initiative was to focus attention on the importance and value of public schools in Illinois. Those involved in and served by public schools understand this. But what about the rest of the community? Do we tell them? Do we ask them?
Over the summer and fall of 2014, IASB invited local districts to take the initiative into their communities by videotaping messages of support in and off the school campus. Those videos are housed on IASB's YouTube page and have also been shared on its website, Facebook fan page and Twitter account.
The campaign also included events at the 2014 Joint Annual Conference, including free wristbands, lapel pins, pens, and a Stand Up 4 Public Schools photo booth.
"It's a simple message, but it has to be repeated," explained IASB Executive Director Roger Eddy. "Locally elected school boards are the only way that communities have a say in what they want their schools to be and look like. There are a lot of things we can do - and are doing - to improve public education. So let's begin by telling others how much we support our schools."
