IASB PRESS RELEASES

IASB Launches Initiative to Support Public Schools
September 15, 2014

Launched earlier this year by the National Association of School Boards, "Stand Up 4 Public Schools" has become a sounding board for individuals and organizations that want to see their support of public education grow.

Today, the Illinois Association of School Boards announced its own initiative in support of the national campaign. The purpose of IASB's "Stand Up 4 Public Schools" initiative is to focus attention on the importance and value of public schools in Illinois. Those involved in and served by public schools understand this. But what about the rest of the community? Do we tell them? Do we ask them?

Over the next several months, this initiative will give Illinois school districts across the state the opportunity to ask and share those answers. There are hundreds if not thousands of potential supporters in every community who would welcome the opportunity to show their support for public schools, explained IASB Executive Director Roger Eddy.

"This initiative is not just for the sake of publicity," he said. "We know how much local communities support their local schools. But does everyone else know? The attacks on public education are well documented. It's time we invite the public to show how much they believe in and value public schools."

IASB is inviting local districts to take the initiative into their communities and encouraging them to videotape messages of support at sites in and off the school campus. These videos will be housed on IASB's YouTube page and shared on its website, Facebook fan page and Twitter account.

School board members and other school leaders attending this year's Joint Annual Conference will also be able to pick up and wear complimentary "Stand Up 4 Public Schools" wristbands and lapel pins.

"It's a simple message, but it has to be repeated," Eddy continued. "Locally elected school boards are the only way that communities have a say in what they want their schools to be and look like. There are a lot of things we can do - and are doing - to improve public education. So let's begin by telling others how much we support our schools."

Questions about IASB’s “Stand Up 4 Public Schools” initiative should be sent to IASB at: communications@iasb.com, or by calling 217/ 528-9688, ext. 1131.
