2022 School Design Awards Announced

Architects and school administrators met on September 15 to judge the 2022 Exhibition of Educational Environments competition sponsored by the IASB Service Associates. Awards go to projects representing innovative design solutions both in new construction and renovation of public school facilities. In total, 17 school designs were considered by the jury .

Two school design projects have been named 2022 Award of Distinction winners. Earning this highest honor was Wight & Company for the design of major additions to Downers Grove North and South High Schools Master Facility Plan in Community High SD 99.

Also taking the top Award of Distinction was DLA Architects, Ltd. for work on the new Washington Elementary School in Schiller Park SD 81.

A total of seven projects were selected to receive awards. In addition to the Award of Distinction, the jury chose two projects for Awards of Merit and three Honorable Mention recipients. The award winners and all the entries submitted for the 2022 Exhibition of Educational Environments are listed below.

Awards recognize outstanding examples of school design and planning. Criteria considered for each project include challenges met, design, energy use reduction, safety, and how well each facility meets the educational needs of students. To be eligible, construction had to be completed in time for occupancy with the start of the 2022-2023 school year.
 
Projects were submitted by design firms with permission from their school district clients. Entries in this year’s competition re invited to display at the Joint Annual Conference November 18-20 in the Grand Hall, East Tower of the Hyatt Regency Chicago.
 
All entries will be added to IASB’s School Design File, a collection of data, illustrations, and commentary featuring more than 600 EEE entries.
