Illinois Association of School Boards Executive Director Thomas Bertrand will step down on June 30, 2023, at the end of the Association’s fiscal year. Bertrand has served as Executive Director since July 1, 2018.

The IASB Board of Directors has accepted Bertrand’s resignation and is establishing an ad hoc committee to initiate the search process for a successor. IASB is one of the largest state school board associations in the country, representing 847 member school districts and nearly 6,000 elected school board members.

IASB President Simon Kampwerth Jr. said the search process will begin with a survey of Association stakeholders, which will include school board members, superintendents, and IASB staff.

“IASB has been so fortunate to have Dr. Bertrand as our leader. We have had positive growth in member engagement and advocacy changes,” said Kampwerth.  “Under Dr. Bertrand’s leadership IASB operates more efficiently and keeps a focus on providing better board governance products to our membership.”

“I am personally grateful to have worked with Dr. Bertrand and wish him and his family the best,” Kampwerth added.

Prior to joining IASB, Bertrand was an educator for 33 years, serving as a teacher, coach, principal, and assistant principal. He was superintendent at Rochester CUSD 3A from 2002-2018.

“I began this job filled with hope and optimism about the future of public education, local governance, and the work of IASB,” Bertrand said. “Despite a global pandemic and the myriad of challenges we have faced together, the Association is poised to meet the future and to continue to serve its members, thanks to a dedicated staff and leadership team.”

Bertrand is the seventh full-time executive director in the Association’s 108-year history.
