IASB Opens Search for Next Executive Director

The Board of Directors for the Illinois Association of School Boards has opened its search for an executive director to replace Thomas E. Bertrand, Ph.D., who has announced his plans to step down at the end of the fiscal year on June 30, 2023. 
 
IASB’s search committee is composed of members of the Association’s Board of Directors, led by Tom Neeley, immediate past president of the IASB Board and a member of the Morton CUSD 709 Board of Education. 

The executive director serves as chief executive officer of IASB and is responsible for executing the policies of the Association and leading a staff of 70 in the Association’s Springfield and Lombard offices. The executive director represents IASB in state and national public school policy matters on behalf of 848 member school districts and nearly 6,000 Illinois school board members.

Bertrand joined IASB in 2018 as the seventh full-time executive director. Prior to joining IASB, Bertrand was an educator for 33 years, serving as a teacher, coach, principal, assistant principal, and superintendent.

Established in 1913, the Illinois Association of School Boards is a voluntary organization of local boards of education dedicated to strengthening public schools through local citizen control. Although not a part of state government, IASB is organized by member school boards as a private not-for-profit corporation under authority granted by Article 23 of The Illinois School Code.

IASB is governed by a Board of Directors which includes the elected officers of the Association; one director from each of 21 regional divisions; and one representative from the IASB Service Associates. Officers include a president, vice president, treasurer, and immediate past president.
