For anyone seeking answers to education-related topics based on current law and practice, the Illinois Association of School Boards offers a key reference book: Illinois School Law Survey. An updated 17th edition is now available, reflecting the impact of legislative changes and relevant court cases from 2021.
The book is the most convenient way to access and cross-reference school law issues, reviewed and updated bi-annually by noted school attorney Brian A. Braun. The question-and-answer format allows readers to find answers to the commonly asked questions facing or posed by school administrators, principals, boards of education, and the general public.
The publication includes answers to over 1,600 questions based on legislation, court decisions, and administrative rules and regulations as of January 1, 2022. Topics covered include school board powers, elections and referendum, student issues including Title IX, records retention and access, student expression, teacher employment, liability concerns, managing school funds, and many more. A quick reference index provides a narrow focus of subjects, and a Table of Court Cases contains all decisions cited in the book.
Each book purchase includes the print format and access to a keyword-searchable digital version at no additional charge. The online format consists of all 27 chapters of Q&A with links to cited court decisions, laws, and more. It is keyword searchable from mobile, tablet, and desktop devices.
Access to the digital edition requires registration upon receipt of a unique access code included on the inside cover of each print book. The digital edition will be available for two years or until the next print edition.
Illinois School Law Survey is available to purchase from the IASB website for $66 ($53 for IASB members). A $7 shipping charge will be applied to each order. For more information or to order by phone, contact IASB at either (217) 528-9688 or (630) 629-3776.
