Proviso THSD 209 and the Proviso Teachers Union have reached a tentative agreement on a three-year contract. Classes will resume on March 28, after the scheduled spring break, bringing to an end a strike that began on March 4. Details on the contract will be published after approval from the teachers and board of education.

“The Board, District administrators and teachers look forward to continuing to work together to maintain and enhance the quality of education and fiscal stability of District 209 for the benefit of our students, staff and community,” said a statement from Board President Rodney Alexander posted on the district website.

The district and teachers had been negotiating since May 2021, including multiple sessions with a federal mediator. The past week’s final negotiations included salary details; the parties had previously agreed on questions of class size and school day schedules. Proviso THSD 209 is based in Maywood and has three schools that serve approximately 4,200 high school students. The district employs 266 teachers.

A strike at Gen Geo Patton SD 133 in Riverdale ended on March 15 after four school days. Negotiations continue in Champaign CUSD 4; offers were posted by the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board on March 4. As of March 23, no potential strike date was set.
