The IASB Board of Directors at its March 5 quarterly meeting approved proposed changes to the Association resolutions process and future advocacy agenda. Directors and officers also heard updates on the Association’s involvement in a new national organization and progress on the board-approved strategic priorities.
The Consortium of State School Boards Associations (COSSBA) is a non-partisan, national alliance of state school boards associations currently being formed. As a founding member, IASB has a seat on a transition committee to establish a permanent board and bylaws. IASB Executive Director Tom Bertrand and President Simon Kampwerth Jr. will attend the transitional meeting in April.
From a report by the Constitution and Resolutions Review Committee, the board reviewed data and recommendations about the IASB Delegate Assembly. The Committee's recommended procedural changes to the Resolutions Process were approved. The board also granted authority to IASB staff to draft proposed constitutional amendments for consideration by the Delegate Assembly.
The report included a set of recommended Advocacy Core Values to guide the establishment of legislative priorities that support IASB positions, which the board affirmed. The procedural changes along with the core values will be reviewed by the Resolutions Committee.
Bertrand updated the board on Strategic Priorities for the current year. The Association has retained 100% active membership. Programs highlighted included new advocacy initiatives, Executive Search services, and a pilot grouping, currently under development, for some fall Division Meetings.
In other business, the board approved an invitation to Common Goal Systems, Inc. for Service Associates membership. In addition, minutes from the November board meetings were approved and posted on the IASB website for members.
Directors also took part in board learning activities and new member orientation to welcome Corn Belt Division Director Nick Sartoris (Pontiac THSD 90).
