A revised book about what school board members should know before bargaining is now available from the Illinois Association of School Boards.
Collective Bargaining and the Illinois School Board Member provides practical insights into school labor relations in the context of Illinois law. The new Fourth Edition examines local practices among Illinois school districts while also explaining the requirements of the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Act.
School board members need to understand which topics the board may address through policy and which topics must be handled at the bargaining table. Matters addressed in the book include the distinction between labor relations and human relations, how the local bargaining process works and where everyone fits in, and options available for improving the bargaining process.
Updates since the previous edition in 2009 reflect changes to fair share and union election procedures and an updated glossary. The 2021 book also features a new appendix of rules and best practices for board members negotiating a collective bargaining agreement.
This latest work has been updated by school attorney Brian A. Braun with the firm of Miller, Tracy, Braun, Funk & Miller, Ltd. Braun is the author of Illinois School Law Survey, also published by IASB.
Collective Bargaining and the Illinois School Board Member is available to purchase from IASB in either print or epub format. The price for the print publication is $18 ($15 for IASB members) plus $7 per order for shipping. The price for the epub format is $15, with the link to access the epub format provided upon checkout.
