Major Issues Looming as Time Marches On

With just over two weeks left until scheduled adjournment on May 31, the Illinois General Assembly has a great deal of work left. Pressing issues are the introduction and passage of a state budget and the decennial task of redistricting.

Many important bills that would impact public education at the local level are awaiting final action, including HB3233 which would mandate additional services for students who are expectant parents or parents or students who have experienced domestic or sexual abuse and SB 654, amended to require 30 minutes of daily unsupervised recess in Kindergarten through 5th Grade. While providing services to students is vitally important, the additional burdens placed on schools districts raise concerns.

The Illinois Association of School Boards continues to work on these issues and many more that will impact your schools. At the end of session, bills can move rapidly and change quickly requiring a quick response from our members to help turn back additional burdensome mandates.

Read more about these issues, plus the bills that have passes and are in committee, in the full IASB Legislative Report 102-16.
