The Illinois Board of Education, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Department of Public Health have announced free or greatly subsidized COVID-19 testing for Illinois middle and high schools. Costs per test will be $0 for Tier 1 and 2 schools with no setup fee, while Tier 3 and 4 schools’ tests will have a $10 fee per test, along with a one-time setup fee of $5,000.
To qualify, schools must commit to testing 50% of their in-person population once a week, or commit to performing at least 10,000 tests through December 31, 2021. In an interview with IASB Executive Director Thomas Bertrand, Beth Heller shared information about the University of Illinois’s innovative covidSHIELD saliva test.
The tests have been proven to detect pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals and allow them to quarantine before spreading the virus. The covidSHIELD test has received emergency use authorization from the Federal Drug Administration. This means that individuals who test positive do not need to seek a second test to confirm the result. The test is non-invasive and does not require a healthcare professional. All tests are collected by a third party.
