Applications for the IASB School Board Governance Recognition program are now available for 2021. To assist with the application process, a “submission guidelines and tips” document has been provided, as well as a preview of the application that can be downloaded and printed.
The School Board Governance Recognition program acknowledges local boards of education that practice effective governance behaviors as outlined by IASB's Foundational Principles of Effective Governance. The focus of Governance Recognition is on full board development and participation. School boards that meet the requirements listed in the application will be recognized for the two-year honorary distinction.
Districts will see some changes to the Governance Recognition criteria this year. As a result of recent focus groups composed of IASB members, School Board Governance Recognition will showcase how good governance is making a positive impact for students, staff, and the entire district community.
The application now includes a section for districts to tell their story about programs and projects that are improving outcomes in their local school districts. It offers to board members an opportunity to highlight how continuous learning, both by individual board members and the full board team, has resulted in improved governance for the board of education.
“This winter we held two focus groups related to our recognition programs. Our members provided us with great suggestions for ways to improve the recognition programs and spotlight the work of the board,” said Dean Langdon, Associate Executive Director of IASB Member Services. “The new sections of the application allow for a narrative around board learning and the positive impact the governance team is making for students. It is important that we provide boards with an opportunity to tell their story and share that story with others.”
The process to complete the application and submit the required materials can be completed entirely online. The deadline for boards to submit completed applications is August 1.
An evaluation committee composed of school board members and IASB staff will review all applications and notify district school boards that have earned the recognition. Boards that meet the requirements will be honored at Fall Division Meetings and acknowledged at the 2021 Joint Annual Conference in November.
Past Governance Recognition winners dating back to 2011 can be viewed on the IASB website. Boards may apply for recognition every two years.
