On March 9, the Illinois State Board of Education, jointly with the Illinois Department of Public Health, released its Revised Public Health Guidance for Schools Part 4: Transition Joint Guidance March 2021. The guidance “supports the return to in-person instruction as soon as practicable in each community” and outlines mitigation strategies for safe return to the classrooms. This guidance also includes updates to capacity limits, adjustments to social distancing recommendations based on vaccinations, and dropping the recommendation for symptom screenings at school in favor of self-screening and certification.

School boards are encouraged to consult their board attorney when considering implementation and discussing local conditions.

This is the fourth installment in the ISBE/IDPH guidance series that began last spring. The others, pertaining to emergency transition efforts in May, June, and August 2020, can be accessed at the ISBE School Wellness/Coronavirus webpage.
