IASB has posted guidance for school boards as they navigate the vaccination process for district staff and teachers. With Illinois entering Phase 1B of the state’s vaccine distribution plan, K-12 educators are now eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccinations.

There are considerations school boards need to be aware of with regards to compelling district employees to receive vaccinations, particularly in relation to collective bargaining requirements.

The guidance includes information on whether districts can require COVID-19 vaccinations for employees, and what exemptions may be permissible. Also highlighted is how incentivizing employees to get vaccinated can affect the terms and conditions of employment and if sick leave can be used when getting vaccinated and recovering from any adverse side effects.

School boards are encouraged to consult their board attorney when considering their district’s vaccination practices.
