Updated information is available on the IASB School Board Elections page for all candidates and prospective candidates for school boards in Illinois. Elections for most Illinois public boards of education are held during the Consolidated Election on the first Tuesday in April of each odd-numbered year.
The information for the April 6, 2021 Consolidated Election includes the updated document that lists Key Dates for School Board Candidates. This covers the process from the first day to circulate nominating petitions, Tuesday, September 22, 2020, through the mid-December filing dates, the April election, and organization of the board thereafter.
IASB’s school board candidate resources also include “Qualifications and Characteristics of School Board Candidates,” guidance documents for candidates from the Illinois State Board of Elections, and information for boards of education seeking to identify, recruit, and mentor future school board candidates.
Nearly 6,000 individuals serve on local public school boards in Illinois, governing the education of nearly 2 million public school students. School board members are elected by their local communities during a consolidated election and serve four-year terms. IASB’s School Board Elections page offers these resources for those anticipating a candidacy or running in the April 6, 2021 election.
