Individuals who are considering running for their local board of education are encouraged to review “Qualifications and Characteristics of School Board Candidates.” This IASB publication summarizes the qualifications, job description, reasons for serving, and characteristics that make effective school board members.
The resource provides board candidates with information they need to prepare for school board service and a description of what is required of the position. Also listed are basic qualifications for appearing on the ballot as a board candidate and a list of additional materials to familiarize candidates with board duties and common public education topics.
School board candidates can begin to circulate nominating petitions for their local board on Tuesday, September 22.
Nearly 6,000 individuals serve on local public school boards in Illinois, governing the education of nearly 2 million public school students. School board members are elected by their local communities during a consolidated election and serve four-year terms. IASB’s School Board Elections page offers resources for those anticipating a candidacy or running in the April 6, 2021 election.
