During this unprecedented national health emergency, school districts face a myriad of issues in terms of dealing with school governance and operations. IASB has compiled guidance to assist boards of education as they prepare to confront the challenges of the 2020-2021 school year.
The guidance document explains: “The intent of this document is to provide a framework to guide local school boards in discussions about the reopening of school in the fall. It reflects the fact that Illinois is a diverse state and that a one-size-fits-all approach is inadequate.”
Considerations are broken down by several topics: Governance and Policy, Internal and External, School Facilities, Academic and Program, Social and Emotional, Fiscal, and Human Resources.
Local boards of education are encouraged to use this guide to frame conversations around the strategic work of the board and the tactical (administrative) work. In a video overview, IASB Executive Director Thomas Bertrand, Ph.D., talks about the board's role in planning and conversations about the opening of school.
Information and guidance from state authorities and health officials continue to evolve. Therefore IASB will update this guidance as appropriate. School districts are encouraged to follow the directives of health officials and use legal counsel when warranted.
