Statement on School Closings Issued
Date PostedMarch 17, 2020
On March 17, the Illinois State Board of Education issued a joint statement in the response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Several important items are included that can offer guidance regarding remote learning, providing meals to students, and salary and benefits to school district faculty and staff. The statement includes designating school closures as “Act of God” days which do not need to be made up.
It is important to remember, however, that current statute and collective bargaining provisions may still be in force. As the employer, school boards are encouraged to consult with the board’s legal counsel before taking any action on the provisions listed in the statement.
Also, as part of the Executive Order Governor Pritzker issued, the provisions requiring in-person attendance by members of a public body (including a school board) are suspended. During the time of the Governor’s emergency proclamation, school board members, generally, will not be required to be physically present at school board meetings. Again, school boards are urged to consult with legal counsel for more procedural details before conducting any such meeting.
