The Illinois High School Association has announced a modified schedule for high school sports in Illinois during the 2020-21 academic year. The IHSA plans to sponsor each of its usual sports, in four shortened seasons.

Of immediate interest is Fall 2020 competition. Cross country and golf for both boys and girls will remain in the fall, as will girls’ tennis and swimming. Traditional fall sports of girls’ volleyball, boys’ soccer, and football will move to a spring season.

The rest of the modifications, all due to the coronavirus pandemic, will be available on the IHSA website.

UPDATE: On July 31, the IESA approved a plan to reinstate its "low-risk" sports for the fall season: baseball, cross country, golf, and softball.
The Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA), which organizes middle school and junior high championships, has canceled most of its fall seasons. The SIJHSAA, which organizes junior high sports downstate, has not determined the fate of its fall seasons.

The IHSA’s much-anticipated July 29 announcement followed by hours a guidance document issued by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker covering youth and adult recreational, club, and school-based sports, dividing them into risk levels and advising on types of play allowed.
