We need your help to stop the bus. House Bill 2287 (Moylan, D-Des Plaines) which would ban the sale of traditional diesel school buses in the State of Illinois on January 1, 2028, and would ban the use of non-electric school buses on January 1, 2035, was moved to third reading on March 16.
HB 2287 can now be called at anytime the House of Representatives is in session. It is estimated this bill would cost school districts across the state hundreds of millions of dollars. So far, a revenue source has not been identified. While purchasing electric school buses has many benefits for school districts, the current cost of this mandate needs to be addressed with funding. In New York State, a $500 million appropriation was granted to school districts to purchase electric buses.
As a school district, you can roughly calculate the cost of this mandate by taking the number of buses you would need to replace, taking the cost of those diesel buses, and multiplying that number by three.
IASB’s opposition to an E-Bus Mandate is strictly from a financial standpoint. As this bill stands, without an available funding source, we encourage you to contact your State Representative and ask them to VOTE NO on HB 2287.
