‘Trends In Collective Bargaining’ Virtual Training Set for January 29

School leaders can join a panel of legal experts on January 29 for a half-day virtual training session on “Trends in Collective Bargaining.” The online event will be held via Zoom from 9 a.m. to noon and is free for IASB members.
Board members and superintendents will hear from a team of Illinois school attorneys as they discuss trends in compensation, benefits, and working conditions, as well as the impact of COVID-19 on employee relations. Two keynote speakers will offer presentations and IASB members will be able to choose from one of three breakout sessions on current collective bargaining topics.
Lisa Calloway, a lawyer with more than 30 years of experience providing employment and labor law counsel to educational employers, will open the event with “Collective Bargaining Trends in Education.” Callaway will address the many challenges of collective bargaining including mid-term bargaining obligations, virtual negotiations, working conditions, and more.
Frank Garrett III will present the second keynote at 10:10 a.m. with a discussion on “Trends in Employment Law.” Garrett, an attorney who represents school districts, colleges, local governmental bodies, and private employers in all aspects of employment law, will cover new federal and state school employment laws and provide an update on COVID vaccination and masking requirements for school employees and students.
Following the two keynotes will be a choice of one of three breakout sessions. Attorneys Brian Bare, David Penn, and David Braun will speak to participants about the board’s negotiating tactics, timing, and preparation during their discussions.
There is no cost for IASB members to participate in the “Trends in Collective Bargaining” training but registration is required. A full event schedule and details on participating speakers and presentation topics are available on the IASB website.
Attendance of this virtual event will earn school board members five Board Leader Recognition points.
