Alliance Legislative Report 95-53

Distributed via Email: January 18, 2008

CORRECTION ON FOOD SERVICE RULES

This is a clarification regarding the Alliance Legislative Report sent out Jan.18 (ALR 95-52) regarding the food service/"junk food" rules being discussed by the State Board of Education. Though the School Wellness Policy Task Force recommended that the nutrition standards be extended to students in high school – the staff proposal given to the State Board of Education this week did not include high schools.

The proposal does recommend that the food service rules:

  • Expand requirements to the entire school campus;
  • Clarify time requirements to the entire school day including 30 minutes before and after the school day;
  • Create two grade groups – pre-kindergarten through grade 5 and grades 6-8; and
  • Implement the plan beginning in school year 2009-2010.

As was stated in the previous report, no action was taken this week, but at some point the board must decide whether or not it wants to pursue new rules regarding the task force report. The board could take up the issue at its February meeting. Again, you are encouraged to review the entire proposal at: www.isbe.net/board/meetings/jan08/rules.pdf. Scroll down to page 88.

We apologize for any confusion the previous report may have caused.
